It’s that time of the year again: the end – and many people will use this time to look back at how they lived this year, and how they can better themselves in the next. In addition to finding new ways to help themselves, many people will think about new ways that they can help others and with so many noble charitable organizations and causes, how can people choose one that casts as wide a net and helps as many different kinds of people as possible?
While not everyone will be affected by every disease, everyone has a heart and needs it to function in order to survive. Because of heart disease, not everyone’s functions as it should, which proves fatal for many people. Heart disease is the world’s leading killer, claiming millions of lives worldwide each year. Many of these deaths are preventable with heart transplants, but there are not enough available hearts in the world to supply everyone who needs one to live.
BIOLIFE4D recognizes that heart disease is the single greatest threat to human life and that millions of lives could be saved if more hearts were available for transplant, so we are working diligently to make that a reality. This cannot happen overnight, but we are making rapid scientific progress. In 2018, we successfully 3D bioprinted a human cardiac patch. While this is a step forward the full-size heart, on its own it can be used to remedy various forms of heart failure, so we have already developed technology with lifesaving potential. Up next is the mini-heart, which has the potential to save the lives of animals used for pharmaceutical testing.
Each year, we want to make our own lives better than they were in the previous, but we should also want to make the world a better place than it was. It is hard to believe that even after all this time, humanity has not been able to find an impactful solution to heart disease. Our new year’s resolution is to bring humanity one step closer to significantly reducing the number of deaths from heart disease.
If you share our enthusiasm for improving the world and want to add this resolution to one of your own, you can support our effort to do so by investing in what has the potential to be one of the greatest achievements in the history of humanity and of medicine.
